CULCAIRN, HENTY, HOLBROOK, JINDERA AND WALLA WALLA

A 'Simply Greater' holiday experience

Flowing just off the mightly Murray River and Lake Hume in New South Wales, this area is a vibrant epicentre of agri-business and richly diverse producers of wheat and other grain, cattle and sheep. Sweeping landscapes and rugged bushland surround the townships of Culcairn, Henty, Holbrook, Jindera and Walla Walla all nestled in the heart of the Murray region.

Thousands flock to the Greater Hume each year for one of Australia’s premier agriculture events – the Henty Machinery Field Days. A mix of the latest machinery and farming equipment, the event features 800 exhibitors and attracts more than 50,000 people over three days. Outdoors and camping, country lifestyle and farm produce also make for a great family day out.

The region also boasts a busy calendar of country events from agricultural shows at Henty, Holbrook, Culcairn and Walbundrie, to many family-friendly festivals. Or frock up for the popular Commander Holbrook Cup race meeting in April – the locals will make you feel welcome!

Known locally as the submarine town, major township Holbrook is home to decommissioned Australian submarine HMAS Otway, AE2 replica and the adjoining Submarine Museum, featuring a 3D hologram, control room and working periscope. The town itself was renamed in 1915 after British WWI submarine commander and Victoria Cross recipient Lt Norman Holbrook. A scale model of his submarine, the HMS B11, is also in the park.

Our rich history and heritage in the many museums from Headlie Taylor's Header at Henty, the German influence at Jindera Pioneer Museum, our railway heritage at Culcairn Stationmaster's Residence or the significance of agriculture at Woolpack Inn, Holbrook or Wymah Museum.

Venture skyward for an awe-inspiring 360-degree view of the region’s spectacular landscapes from the top of gigantic granite outcrop, Morgan’s Lookout. This was once the hiding spot of notorious 1860s bushranger and local legend Mad Dan Morgan, but 150 years later, the precinct is packed with picnickers and families in the sun.

If nature’s your thing, discover the wonders of planet earth with an afternoon exploring the Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre, a leader in environmental education. Just a few hours here provides discovery and learning about the natural environment, the ecology of the local woodlands and the beauty of native plants for our gardens. Well worth a visit.

Not far from the bountiful Lake Hume, Woomargama National Park is the largest protected area west of the Great Dividing Range and home to some of the Murray’s most endangered species. Campers, bushwalkers and bird watching enthusiast flock to this lush and peaceful retreat with warm sunny days all year round.
