Swan Hill is a relaxed and friendly riverside town at the heart of a bountiful region of stone-fruit orchards, wineries, top-notch fishing – for Murray cod, of course – and cool riverside camping spots. Basking on the banks of the legendary Murray and Marraboor (Little Murray) rivers, Swan Hill is a vibrant town with a few legends of its own.
A good place to start the day is the historic area along the Marraboor River where the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery features a comprehensive collection of Australian Naïve art and changing exhibitions. The 5km river walk is a great way to take in the Murray River at a leisurely pace.
Swan Hill was a staging port for riverboat traffic in the 19th century, a bygone time you can relive at the nearby Pioneer Settlement. Allow at least a few hours to explore the Pioneer Settlement, where the streets, shops, homesteads and community buildings of a 19th-century port town come to life. The huge paddlesteamer Gem is parked here, but for a river cruise you’ll need to board the PS Pyap, an 1896 steamer that departs daily from the Pioneer Settlement wharf.
Alongside history, Swan Hill is a modern, thriving town. Just minutes from Swan Hill’s town centre, the Murray Downs Golf and Country Club is widely regarded as one of the top regional golf courses in the country.
Heading out of Swan Hill, a scenic driving tour takes you to a handful of excellent wineries, and the nearby Nyah & Vinifera State Forests have fine bushwalking trails through river red gums. Lake Boga, only 15km south of Swan Hill, is a popular watersports destination, and is the home of the huge Catalina flying boat.
The heart of the Murray food bowl, Swan Hill’s fresh produce can be found plated up throughout the township. Spend a relaxing afternoon soaking up the river’s natural beauty at a riverside restaurant, or taste authentic flavours from around the globe at award-winning restaurants in town.
