Mungo National Park is just the start of the adventure

Make a beeline for Wentworth and you’ll be in prime position to experience landscapes and scenery unlike anywhere else in the world.
Mungo National Park, a World Heritage-listed site, acts as a conduit for visitors to reach out and connect with the ancient Aboriginal people who lived in the area as much as 45,000 years ago. Mungo Man, the earliest discovered human cremation, and other important archaeological discoveries like Mungo Woman and human footprints, tie visitors to the past in an enthralling setting of lunar-like landscapes.
Head back to Wentworth to view the confluence of the mighty Murray and Darling rivers from a purpose-built tower as the two powerful bodies of water meet. If you’re feeling energetic (or the kids are) head just out of town to the Perry Sandhills – 400 acres of roiling, shifting sand dunes waiting for you to jump and slide on, or to sit and observe as colour-flushed evening comes to settle on the sand.
Lunch overlooking the Murray at a local winery is a must-do experience. Treat yourself to award-winning wines, spectacular food and a meal with a view, while you sample for yourself why the rich loam of the area is so rewarding to winemakers; and to their fans.
When you’ve finished luxuriating over lunch, visit historic Wentworth Gaol for a stark reminder of the harsh, uncompromising nature of life for settlers on the edge of inland-Australia at the turn of last century.
Wentworth also has its own quirky arts scene, including the Artback Australia Gallery & Café, showcasing local artists in an historic building.
If a road trip packed with archaeology, recent history, jaw-dropping vistas, exceptional vineyards and sights that truly can only be found in one spot in the world is high on your list of must-dos, Wentworth should be your destination.
