7 breweries in The Murray you need to know about

If you’ve been daydreaming about kicking back, putting your feet up and sinking a couple of schooners, we’ve got you sorted.

Our guide to breweries along the Murray River will take you from Burramine to Albury, tasting the region’s best ales, stouts and lagers.

Complimenting the heritage of the land, each brewery possesses its own brewing flair, united with one common goal - to produce creamy, fresh pints of liquid gold.

Hop(s) to it, negotiate a designated driver and get ready for a whole lot of tasty paddles as you tick these breweries off your list.

1. Byramine Homestead Brewery

Ripe with history, the Byramine Homestead was built in 1842 by famous explorer Hamilton Hume.

Now housing an onsite brewery and cider house, it’s the ideal place to get acquainted with the heritage of the land while sipping on boutique beers, fresh ciders and a selection of wine.

If the sun’s out, plant yourself under the shade of the oldest Elm trees in Victoria within the Homestead’s garden and enjoy a ploughman's lunch, pie of the day with beer battered chips or tasting board of dips.

Be sure to step back in time with a self-guided tour through the historical homestead, viewing its octagonal rooms and preserved furnishing.

You’ll find the Byramine Homestead Brewery in Burramine nestled within the grounds of one of Australia’s largest vegetable farms, Kelly Bros.

2. Mildura Brewery

Step inside the Mildura Brewery pub for casual-style dining, alongside a schooner or two of craft beer.

Grab a beer tasting paddle and savour your way through seasonal ales, pilsners, lagers and stouts.

Housed inside the original Astor Theatre (est 1924), this beer hall in Mildura pays tribute to the original architecture of the art-deco building.

If you’re passing through Mildura on a Monday, make sure to book ahead for $10 pot and parmy night.

3. Morrisons Riverview Winery Restaurant and Brewery

On the banks of the Murray River, in Moama sits the Morrisons Riverview Winery Restaurant (and now) Brewery.

Their onsite brewery, 1710 Brew Co was dreamed up by the team at Morrison’s, powered by their love for beer.

You’ll find them brewing up small-batch craft ales and ciders on tap every weekend from October to March, served in the beer garden.

If you’re travelling through, be sure to call up and make an appointment with Brewer Shari, who will take you through the journey of all things beer.

4. The Goods Shed Craft Beer Café

For a side of history with your afternoon ale, set your GPS to The Goods Shed Craft Beer Café.

Built in the 1870s as a transport hub for moving ‘goods’ between Melbourne and Sydney, the warehouse has since been transformed into an urban oasis within an old railway precinct, in the heart of Wodonga.

Step inside their modern industrial bar and restaurant to discover a rotation of 16 Australian craft beers on tap, along with a seasonal menu of share plates and pizza.

Paying homage to original artefacts the bar and furniture have been upcycled from redgum sleepers and railway tracks.

Keen to sink into a couple of brews at home? Bring your own one or two-litre growler for a takeaway beer on tap or purchase one from the bar.

5. Stock & Barrel

Modern Australian dining paired with luxury accommodation equates to the Sebel Yarrawonga’s very own bistronomy, Stock & Barrel.

Inspired by the region’s historical pubs and the overland stockmen that frequently crossed the Murray River over the Yarrawonga stock bridge, Stock & Barrel was born.

Cosy up by the fireplace or rug up and venture onto the terrace overlooking Lake Mulwala.

You’ll find their menu fresh with locally foraged produce accompanied by craft beers, regional wines and spirits sculpted into alluring cocktails.

Give the ‘tipsy teapot’ a try for a warming blend of lemongrass and ginger tea, vodka, cointreau and fresh lime.

6. The Old School Meadery

While it’s not quite your typical ale, The Old School Meadery brews something a little sweeter, well worth stopping by to try.

Plunge into the medieval craft of mead making, a traditional honey wine, guaranteed to romanticise you by the mouthful.

The Riverina region is renowned for its Australian bush honey, so reflecting those flavours within this ancient winemaking technique was a no brainer from the first sip.

Enjoy a mead tasting tray at the cellar door open Tuesday – Monday and bring along a picnic (cheese and sweet desserts complement the honey flavours) to be eaten within the garden.

7. Albury Brewhouse

Drawing upon spacious contemporary dining and fresh craft beers, Albury Brewhouse is a microbrewery to make note of.

Taste their seasonal menu of share plates and traditional pub meals including ribs, wagyu beef burgers and a parmigiana perfectly complimented by a couple of pints of beer on tap.

Grab one of the Brewhouse Brewers Choice Beer Boxes on your way out for a selection of house ales – the perfect gift or tasty treat for yourself.
