The Murray is a legendary place to revel in authentic Aussie culture, great music festivals and sporting prowess – from the iconic Deni Ute Muster to a five-day paddling marathon; from world-class waterskiing competitions to attending a festival or two – Murray events will be a highlight of your holiday.
Another special feature of the Murray are the week end markets where you will find a tantalising range of fresh produce and quirky gifts.
Club Marine Southern 80 (February) Supercharged speedboats pulling super-skilled waterskiers for 80km from Torrumbarry to Echuca Moama – that’s Club Marine Southern 80, the largest and most thrilling waterski race in the world. Held in February, the event attracts over 400 entries and some 80,000 spectators. Boats carry one driver, one observer and two skiers travelling through 126 bends in the Murray at speeds of up to 200kmh!
Riverboats Music Festival, Echuca Moama (February) Framed by a natural amphitheatre of towering River Red Gums on the banks of the Murray, the Riverboats Music Festival is the Murray region’s premiere contemporary music event. Over three days on the third weekend in February, some of Australia’s finest artists take to the stage for a rollicking weekend of music, dancing and regional food and wine.
Mildura Country Music Festival
Mildura’s toe-tappin’, finger-pickin’ country music bash in late September draws some of Australia’s finest independent country music stars and rising talent, performing at more than 20 venues around town.
Deni Blues & Roots Festival (Easter)
After an Award winning first year in 2013, the Deni Blues and Roots Festival is confirmed to return on an annual basis over the Easter Weekend in Deniliquin in southern New South Wales. It’s two days of non-stop music, onsite camping, two stages and massive international headline acts. The Festival is unique for southern NSW and utilises the massive Deni Ute Muster site, which has had millions of dollars of permanent staging and lighting infrastructure installed in recent years.
Mildura Writers’ Festival (July)
With a reputation that has grown from humble beginnings in Stefano de Pieri’s cellar restaurant 20 years ago, the Mildura Writers’ Festival draws the cream of Australia’s literary talent along with notable international authors. Readings, workshops and fireside chats are held at venues throughout Mildura over the course of a winter weekend.
Legendary Aussie Icons
Deni Ute Muster (October)
Only in Australia! Wanting to celebrate the iconic ute and Australia’s rural identity, in 1999 the good people of Deniliquin came up with the idea of setting a record for the largest parade of legally registered utes in the world. It made the Guinness Book of Records (2839 utes) and the Deni Ute Muster was born. The event has grown into a classic bush bash with a family camp-out, bush poetry and a fabulous lineup of country music stars. The Muster also holds a record for most number of people wearing blue singlets - 3500 people!
Australian Billy Cart Championships
(Easter) Held over the Easter weekend in Corowa, this race celebrates the humble Aussie billy cart – though the designs are a bit fancier than when we were kids!
Massive Murray Paddle (November) This five-day, 404km paddling event from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill is one of the longest annual flatwater canoe races in the world. What’s more, it’s a much-loved fundraising event benefitting the YMCA. Find a spot on the banks to cheer on individual and team entrants as they paddle through Tocumwal, Picnic Point, Echuca, Torrumbarry and Murrambit, or join the party at the finish line in Swan Hill.
