Mathoura is a sweet little town with a charming main shopping street, a vast array of public artworks, and beautiful forests and waterways at every turn.
Just 40km north of Echuca Moama, Mathoura is the gateway to one of the largest red gum forests in the world. The forest stretches for more than 70,000 hectares and includes wetlands of international significance. It features good dry weather roads and sprawling low riverbanks that feed out across gloriously flat sheets of water.
Mathoura is a popular destination for those seeking the gentle country lifestyle and a peaceful retreat in the heart of a beautiful natural environment. There are some interesting heritage and nature walks, both from the centre of town, and from nearby Picnic Point.
Stretch your legs, grab a coffee in Lawrence St, and enjoy a stroll in the fresh air. There’s a neat horseshoe loop along Gulpa Creek that takes about 30 minutes. It’s part of the longer 5km Gulpa Creek Walk – do that instead if you’ve got a spare 90 minutes.
