Murray River Road

Nathalia and Barmah

The towns of Nathalia and Barmah lie in a unique area of nature and history between the Goulburn and Murray Rivers in Victoria. With the ancient Barmah National Park, Broken Creek and of course the Murray River, this area is well worth exploring on the Murray River Road.

Go off-road (it’s actually a pretty good dirt track for the first bit, but don’t go further in your Hyundai) and explore the natural wonders of the Barmah National Park. The forest, river and wetlands are home to over 230 species of birdlife and a unique range of Australia's flora. Since the Dreamtime, this area has been home to the Yorta Yorta people, as evidenced by more than 1000 scarred trees, middens, burial grounds, mounds and more.

Head to the Barmah Forest Heritage and Education Centre in Nathalia to find out about the fascinating Yorta Yorta and colonial history of the area, then stroll past the shops and relax in the sun beside the Broken Creek at the end of the street. Sweet…
