Fishing

Home of the Murray Cod

The Edward River is famous Australia-wide as home to the iconic Murray Cod and other native fish, including Yellowbelly. You can take a short boat ride into the quiet forest waters, or simply cast a line from the bank. Catching a Murray Cod is one of the most exhilarating experiences and has to be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

Anglers travel from near and far to the Edward River in the knowledge that they have a very real chance of catching the iconic Murray Cod. Deniliquin really is a fisherman’s paradise, and there’s no more rewarding time to drop a line than during the annual Deniliquin XXXX Gold Fishing Classic.

The classic is held during February each year and has a massive $70,000 prize pool up for grabs. It has been going for more than 20 years and just keeps getting bigger and better, with more than 1,700 anglers taking to the Edward River attempting to hook the biggest fish. This is a great event for the whole family.

What you’ll need to catch a winner
  1. Fishing licence: You can pick up a short-term fishing licence from one of the local service stations, it should only set you back a few dollars.
  2. Fishing rod: Bring your rod from home or pick up an affordable rod and tackle kit from one of our local fishing and camping stores.
  3. Bait: Shrimps, worms, grubs, yabbies and cheese are the most popular baits. You can pick these up from the local fishing and camping stores, or most service stations in town.
  4. Local hot spot knowledge: Head to the Visitor Information Centre in George Street and we’ll give you the lowdown on the local hot spots.
