Sitting on a pretty bank of the Billabong Creek – reportedly the longest creek in Australia – the Wanganella General Store draws visitors from all around for the friendly service, cold drinks and classic pub meals. More than just a shop, the General Store is a reason to visit.
Wanganella is probably most famous as the birthplace of the hardy Peppin merino sheep breed; a hardy, large sheep that was built for Australia’s climate and conditions. The Peppin merino is now the most common breed in Australia, and a bronze statue at the front gates of Wanganella Station, just south of the village, commemorates its importance.
The village is around 45 minutes’ drive north of Deniliquin along the flat Hay Plains, and makes a nice side-trip to see the countryside, eat at the General Store and maybe take in the breathtaking sunsets and astonishingly bright, starry night sky.
Adventurous types can explore the region’s tracks and waterways – either on foot or bike – and maybe even find a secluded spot to cast a line and catch a fish or two. Heading north from Deni, take a left at the first dirt road after the Billabong Creek bridge (no sign, no name!) for some beautiful natural picnic spots. As well as fish, this spot is home to several striking bird species; it’s great for all lovers of nature and the great outdoors.
If you’re camping or towing a van, take a breather at the tranquil Wanganella Creek Camp Park. The small grounds feature showers, toilets and a camp kitchen, and make a great rest stop for a couple of nights on your journey.
The Wanganella Cottage is another peaceful location to spend a few days. The cottage is fully self contained located close to the Wanganella General Store and local tennis courts. The cottage offers guests complimentary racquets and the river frontage making fishing just too easy. Plus, the cottage is pet friendly so you're welcome to bring your pooch along (just be sure to keep them in the enclosed garden).
