Golf Trip to the Sun Country – 3-Day Itinerary

The Murray River is the thread that unites so much that is great about northern Victoria. Dotted along our beautiful stretch of the Sun Country are great fishing spots, farm gates with an abundance of fresh produce to sample, and river beaches tailor-made for camping or a quiet paddle.

But perhaps our biggest drawcard of all is golf. Whether you’re touring the length of the Murray, or planning to base yourself here in the Sun Country at towns like Yarrawonga Mulwala, Cobram Barooga or Tocumwal, our golf courses offer fun and challenge for novices and experienced golfers alike.

Take a long weekend off and head to the Sun Country for a golfing holiday that offers so much more.

FRIDAY

There are plenty of lovely places to stay in our towns and rural villages to suit all budgets and styles. It’s easy to find accommodation for singles, couples, families or groups.

Arrive for a late morning check-in then take a drive to Monichino Wines, which has been a popular destination in Katunga for the past 50 years. Or take the easy option and settle in at Yarrawonga Mulwala or Cobram Barooga’s cafes. Lovely, fresh food is on offer at these bustling border eateries.

There are many fresh farm gates to visit, but if clubs are your weapon, an afternoon’s golf at the Cobram Barooga Golf Club’s champion-standard 36-hole layout just can’t wait. For dinner, try the Italian-inspired menu at The Old Bank restaurant in Tocumwal, just 20 minutes from Cobram. The deck is lovely on warmer evenings, and the pizzas go down a treat.

SATURDAY

Start the day with a good breakfast and enjoy the pretty views at the Lake Cafe & Deck in Yarrawonga Mulwala, just 30 minutes up-river from Cobram.

Spend the rest of the morning at the celebrated Peter Thomson and Ross Perrett-designed Black Bull course at Silverwoods on the lakeside at Yarrawonga. Complete your round in time for a lunch-time cruise on the steam-driven paddle boat PS Cumberoona or the more modern M.V. Paradise Queen on Lake Mulwala.

In the afternoon, get a better sense of your natural surrounds by booking a guided or self-guided kayak adventure through Airtree Golfers Resort, exploring the waters east of Yarrawonga. Spot birdlife, turtles and, perhaps, a platypus.

You’ll have earned a pre-dinner drink. Why not combine that with dinner itself at one of the amazing Sebel restaurants in Yarrawonga. Try Stock & Barrel for the gourmet bistro menu, or end your day on a high with fine dining at Elizabeth’s.

SUNDAY

You’ll probably wake up ready for a big breakfast. Famous across our region is Cafe 3641 on Main Street in Strathmerton, 20km west of Cobram.

Book an unforgettable morning on the eco-certified Kingfisher Cruises. Gliding through the world heritage-listed Barmah Wetlands on a boat, it’s both a history lesson and a nature experience as you try to spot some of the 236 species of birds, 50 mammals and 500 plants found in the area.

Locals like to lunch at The Cobram Beach Club a cafe and restaurant at popular Thompson’s Beach, one of Australia’s largest inland beaches.

Bring your clubs and follow up with a friendly game at the lovely 36-hole Tocumwal Golf Club. Reciprocal rights are granted to members of more than 70 clubs around Australia, so check their website and you might snare 50% off.

Mid-afternoon you might like a treat at The Big Strawberry in Koonoomoo, on the road back to your accommodation – the desserts are to die for. Pick up some surprising strawberry-based produce before collecting your bags and hitting the road for home.

On the way back home, start planning your next trip to the Sun Country. Our Murray Farm Gate Trail is a delightful way to spend a few days any time of the year, and the perfect reason to visit the Sun Country again.
