There are many species of birds living in this unique environment. The riverside forests, woodlands and wetlands provide an important habitat, particularly for water birds.
Watching birds can take on many different forms. For most, it is a relaxing pastime to explore new areas while enjoying the freedom of solitude. Others see it as a social experience, meeting with people who share a common interest. Maybe it is the lure of the chase that ignites a birdwatcher’s passion, with others seeing birds as environmental indicators and use them to understand how the natural world is faring.
From bird hides at Kinnairds Wetlands to the majestic, untamed Barmah National Park, there are plenty of rare and spectacular birds to spot in Sun Country.

This is a beautiful day area, located in an idyllic setting, a few minutes’ drive from the center of Cobram.
There are picnic and barbeque facilities and also shared walking and cycling tracks that link to Quinn Island. An ideal place to relax and enjoy the local birdlife and the perfect base to begin your adventure!
This is located at River Road Cobram and is a waterbird haven for Kingfishers, Egrets and other water birds within the lagoons and billabongs of this nature sanctuary.
Walk through River Red Gum forests and marvel at the native birds and animals, close to the centre of town.
There is a 1.6kms walking track and a viewing bird hide.
This is located along the Murray River between Barmah and Strathmerton.
The complex ecology of the forest is closely linked to the Murray River and its flooding regime, creating a diverse natural habitat for a variety of wildlife, particularly waterbirds.
Over 200 species of birds have been recorded in the forest.
It is one of Australia’s largest water bird breeding areas.
The birds to spot include: Brolgas, Night Herons, Spoonbills, Sea Eagles, Whistling kites.
This is a promontory and can be found east of the Yarrawonga town centre.
Chinaman's Island offers a two kilometre return walk from the Yarrawonga Yacht Club car park.
Seating is provided along the walk, so you can sit and ponder the beauty of the surrounding wetlands.
Birdlife is abundant in this area and signage at the entrance to the island will interpret some of the species you may encounter. You are likely to see cocktaoos, pelicans, galahs, ibis and more.
Motor vehicles are prohibited on Chinaman's Island, however cyclists and walkers are welcome. The track is accessible in all conditions and is an easy walk for all ages.
This beautiful natural wetland is located north of the Broken Creek, near Numurkah. It covers an area of nearly 100 hectares of natural and constructed wetland.
There are almost 145 bird species that have been recorded to date.You might see small birds such as the beautiful Scarlet Robin and watch overhead for birds of prey including Wedge-tailed Eagle, Whistling Kite and Peregrine Falcon.
A range of constructed trails suitable for walking and cycling (see map inside brochure), boardwalks, bird hides and picnic areas give you the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful diversity of wetlands, woodlands and wildlife.
On the Wetland Walk (2 km loop trail), there are some of the more common birds to look out for which include, spoonbills, ducks, ibis, herons and cormorants.
