Boating

Easy life on the Murray

With around 175km of the iconic Murray winding through our region – not to mention our lakes and aquatic centres – it’s easy to laze through a day on a cruise boat or pontoon barbecue boat. Take your time, soak up the stunning scenery and enjoy time well spent with family and friends. You may choose to bring along your kayak and take the kids out for a leisurely paddle.

You can totally relax and leave the work to the experts on a Lake Mulwala cruise. Choose dining cruises or afternoon jaunts on the M.V. Paradise Queen or the P.S. Cumberoona.

Windsurfing or paddle boarding options are available on Lake Mulwala for those looking for a challenge in the warmer months.

For something a little less adventurous, some might prefer to sit back and watch the children from the water’s edge. Perhaps launch your own boat at one of the many river access points and enjoy the simple pleasure of our waterways at your own pace.

Boating events

Lake Mulwala plays host to boating events that draw enthusiasts from across Australia. The Australian Barefoot Waterski National Championships, taking place over a week in March and featuring more than 100 competitors, are a spectacle to behold. Revving even harder every autumn is a round of the Australian Formula Powerboat GP, hosted by the Mulwala Water Ski Club. The speed and sound of these ‘thunder boats’ are pure adrenaline for eager spectators.

Summertime visitors should check out the longest-running rowing regatta in the country, the Lake Moodemere Rowing Regatta, held every January at nearby Lake Moodemere.

Smaller lakes and waterways

Kayakers and those looking for quieter waters can head north on Federation Way to Urana. When the water levels are up, the Urana Aquatic Centre and – with the permission of locals – nearby saltwater Lake Urana offer tranquility and the chance to spot native waterbirds and indulge in a spot of fishing.

For even more off-the-beaten-track floating, try the quiet, lovely waterways that run either side of the Newell Highway: the Colombo, Yanko and Boree Creeks are all great for paddlers looking for a natural escape.
