Autumn Fun With Friends

Explore the Murray with your besties

Get out of town this Autumn and head to the river for a fun and relaxing time with your closest friends. A weekend (or even longer) with the girls, or a blokes-only getaway; North of the Murray is perfect in the mild Autumn months, with an average temperature of 23 degrees in Autumn. There’s heaps of adventures to have – here are just a few ideas to get the ball rolling…

Arrival - Day 1

While there are lots of caravan parks and hotel/motel options, why not check into one of our region’s excellent self-contained properties? Corowa’s Murray Bank Holiday Units is set on 16 acres with 250 metres of river frontage for fishing, bird watching or just relaxing, and is a good place to start your accommodation search. Imagine arriving, settling in and stretching out on the lawn in the sunny afternoon air.

For dinner after arrival, head down the road to Club Corowa, or Corowa Golf Club for an easy dinner and kick off the weekend with a couple of well-deserved drinks in the evening.

Day 2

Start your day with a fresh-cooked café breakfast – angle for an outdoor table if the sun’s shining – and fuel up on coffee before taking a walk around town. Look out for buildings that played a role in Australian Federation on the Corowa History Trail.

Tee off for 18 holes in the late morning sunshine at the majestic Corowa Golf Club, then head to Corowa Whisky and Chocolate to sample the chockies and amazing small-batch whiskies, and enjoy some lunch in the cool 100-year-old building. In the afternoon head back to your accommodation for a well-earned rest, ready to freshen up for that dinner you planned earlier.

From a simple pub meal with ample drinks in a vibrant beer garden to D’Amicos for a leisurely Italian meal accompanied by the best wines from Rutherglen and beyond, any choice is a good one. The evenings are typically cool and clear at this time of year, so there’s always time for a riverside stroll as the stars fill the night skies.

Day 3

After a lazy sleep in and a long brunch, head south of the state border with your friends to sample some wines at nearby Wahgunyah and Rutherglen. Wander the grounds at Pfeiffer’s; a perfect place to relax on a mild sunny day. Just make sure you’ve got room in the boot for a few bottles of your favourite drop. Pack your camera too: even novice photographers can nail that perfect shot with the leaves changing colour and birds getting ready for the winter. Instagram will never know what hit it!

Zip across to Mulwala for a scenic lunchtime cruise on the PS Cumberoona or MV Paradise Queen (and more photo ops) before deciding whether you need to head back home, or want to stretch out your stay even longer, taking full advantage of the mild Autumnal adventures on offer along the Murray.
