Autumn Self Drive and Touring

Wide Open Road.

Exploring the glorious Murray and nearby towns and villages is a perfect way to spend your Autumn days as you tour around the region. Whether you’re travelling solo, in a couple, or with a convoy of family and friends, the combination of friendly towns, idyllic camping grounds, warm days, cooler nights and open roads is as close to paradise as you’ll find anywhere.

Stick close to the waterways and there’ll always be somewhere to paddle on those warmer days. Don’t miss the opportunity to pull over and transfer your touring to a BBQ boat, fishing tinny or organised cruise along our rivers and lakes. Long weekends and the Easter break are tailor-made for a motoring holiday. We hope to see you soon.

Day 1 – Howlong

The region around Corowa welcomes people towing caravans or travelling in motorhomes, and is well set up with facilities to make exploring the region easy and convenient.

Start your journey at Howlong. Grab some bait and some inside info before heading to the river for a spot of fishing. Autumn weather means the Murray Cod are waiting for you. This prize fish becomes active after the hot summer, feeding up before the cooler months to come … If you’re lucky, that’s dinner sorted!

Otherwise, you’re still in luck, as the nearby Court House Hotel, Howlong Hotel and Howlong Country Golf Club all serve great meals, and are within easy walking distance of the caravan park. Settle in for a meal and drink in a beer garden, and enjoy the sunny days and cool evenings.

Day 2

After a delicious seasonal breakfast at the 1/2 Acre Coffee Lounge, hit the road and drive 20 minutes to Corowa. Wander the pretty main street, looking out for signposted heritage sites commemorating the town’s role in Australia’s Federation.

Pop into Corowa Whisky and Chocolate for lunch. The grand Corowa Flour Mills building – dating back to the 1920s – is the perfect venue for informative tours and delicious samples. Try a tipple or make your own giant freckle. Or both! In the afternoon, head north to Oaklands, a small town with overnight RV parking. Take in the town’s historical Vintage Machinery Museum.

Day 3 - Mulwala or Urana

Depending on your preferences (and the weather forecast), kick off the day either heading north to the aquatic playground of Urana – featuring waterside walking tracks and sculptures that form part of a sculpture trail that also takes in Corowa, Boree Creek, Oaklands and Morundah – or back down to vibrant Lake Mulwala for lakeside leisure, watersports and fishing). Wherever you go, there are camping grounds and caravan parks to relax in.

Autumn sees Urana and Mulwala in full glory, with the foliage glowing with reds, oranges and yellows. Bright sunny days are just the thing for a relaxing day spent beside, on or in the water.
