The Swan Hill region is the centre of Australia’s fresh stone fruit industry, where each season brings different varieties to tempt you. The Mediterranean-style climate and soils are ideal for the consistent production of quality produce, and the area in and around Woorinen – just 10 minutes’ drive north-west of Swan Hill centre – is the beating heart of this delicious, thriving fruit industry.
Head not far out on the Woorinen Road and you’ll find yourself surrounded by orchards. There’s also a mountain bike track linking Woorinen South to Swan Hill. Keep an eye out for ‘orchard door’ sales – just-picked peaches, grapes and more at a tenth the price of city supermarkets is simply irresistible!
In town, quench your thirst at the Woorinen South Tavern and view Syd’s Private Collection – a 30-plus-year gathering of classic motorbikes, scale model cars, photographs and district memorabilia. It’s been lovingly curated by Syd, who will show you around if you call ahead on 0498 248 184. Before leaving Woorinen, be sure to stretch your legs on an afternoon walk in the nearby bush reserve.
