People have been lured to the Murray River in the Swan Hill region for thousands of years, trying their luck, feeding their communities, just relaxing – but all the time hoping to land a famed Murray cod. These days, you don’t have to be fishing for sustenance or prize money to experience the serene pleasure of spending a day or two in natural surrounds along this magnificent stretch of river.

Do something different with your family, and learn the art of fishing together. You will find everything you need at the many bait and tackle businesses in the region – including bait, rods, lures, licences and local knowledge to know where the fish are biting.

You can stay close to town and chat with local anglers at the Swan Hill boat ramp, just north of the town centre. Or enjoy the rugged, steep banks of the river at the more secluded Pental Island, about 20 minutes from Swan Hill. Here, the flat road gives way to towering river red gums, and provides ample opportunity to set up in the shade for a morning or a whole day.

Whether riverside, wading, or fishing from a ‘punt’ boat, keen anglers head to Stoney Crossing, half an hour’s drive north of Swan Hill on the Wakool River. Golden perch will be jumping onto your baited line if the locals are to be believed! Whether you bag a cod, yellow belly or redfin, the conversations and experiences you share will remain with you for long time.

The spectacular river will be a generous host and, with any luck, there will be fish on the menu at the end of the day!
