Getting Here

People travel from all directions to Swan Hill, which is a major tourism and service hub.

Driving time

Swan Hill is just a stone’s throw from Mildura, Bendigo, Echuca, Deniliquin and Ouyen. From major metro centers, we’re in easy reach too:

  • Melbourne: 3.5 hrs
  • Adelaide: 5.5 hrs
  • Bendigo: 2.5 hrs
  • Albury: 4 hrs
  • Wagga Wagga: 4.5 hrs
  • Ballarat: 3 hrs

Like any great Aussie town, the Swan Hill train station is smack in the centre of town, and about 2 minutes walk to the river. Arrive, and before you know it, you’ll be sipping a cool drink in the shade of a towering river redgum.

There are trains at least once a day from:

  • Sydney
  • Melbourne
  • Albury
  • Mildura
  • Shepparton
  • Bendigo

Traveling here from Melbourne?
You can catch the train from both Swan Hill or Melbourne twice a day. And as an extra incentive, present your V/line ticket at the Pioneer Settlement and you will receive 25% off your admission, Pyap River Cruise, and/or the Heartbeat of the Murray!

Departing from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne, buses travel via Castlemaine and Bendigo throughout the day.

You can also get a bus from Sydney, via Canberra and Albury. Sit back, relax and press play on your favorite podcast or audiobook as you take in the mallee scenery.

Car rental

Major car rental businesses including Hertz and Nifty operate from Swan Hill, so pick a car up at your arrival airport or hire one from Swan Hill for a day or two to explore the region.

Getting Around

As well as car rental (see the previous section), there are other ways to get around Swan Hill if you don’t have your own car.

Walking and Cycling

One of the best things about Swan Hill is that you can walk, or cycle around town with ease!

The Swan Hill City bus service travels an hour-long 23km route through town in both directions. The service operates Mon–Fri during business hours, and on Saturday morning. You can explore nearby towns by bus too, with occasional services to Tooleybuc, Sea Lake and Ultima. Visit BusBiz for routes and timetables.
