Murray River Road

Greater Hume

The Greater Hume shire, north of Albury, is a vibrant epicentre of grain and sheep farming. Is there anything more quintessentially Australian than that?

Sweeping landscapes and rugged bushland surround the townships of Culcairn, Henty, Holbrook, Jindera and Walla Walla. Race meetings, agricultural events (including the unexpectedly epic Henty Machinery Field Days, held in September, where farmers gather to check out new equipment and everyone else pretends it’s a fun fair), and – of course – the legendary Holbrook submarine, have all been drawing visitors for decades. Yep. Submarine.

They flock to these Federation towns looking for something real, unique and authentic. And it's all here, easily found in museums, at local events, in conversations at the pub … and in the submarine.
