Murray River Road

Howlong

If you’re into history, there’s a really great walking tour of this small but important colonial-era town (maps available at Visitor Info Centres in the region). If you lived in Melbourne in 1838 and sent a letter to your friend in Sydney, this is where the rider would cross on his horse (always a him), trying to make sure the saddlebags didn’t get too wet.

The river is still a big focus of life in Howlong today. If you like to spend a day fishing, it’s a classic spot to catch THE classic fish – the Murray Cod.

If you’re like the rest of us, it’s still a charming little place with a couple of pubs, a very nice golf course, and two great riverside parks that are tailor-made for picnics in the sun. While away a day enjoying the quiet life.
