Prepare to be delighted as you wander through the stunning desert landscape of Cactus Country - a little piece of Mexico on the Murray. This one-of-a-kind attraction boasts over 10 acres of incredible cacti gardens that will transport you to another world.
While your furry friend will need to stay on a lead, they'll love exploring the winding paths with you, and there's plenty of shady spots for them to rest while you take a few happy snaps. Afterward, be sure to grab a bite and a frozen margi at the onsite Mexican bar and restaurant, where pets are welcome to join you in the outdoor seating area.
Silo Art Trail
For those with a love of both art and history, the Silo Art Trail in Sun Country is a must-see.
These towering masterpieces, spread across small villages in the region, tell the stories of the local communities and their heritage. Our curated collection of six silo artworks spans from south to north (or vice versa, if you wish!) along the road linking Benalla to Cobram, extending west nearly to Barmah. Covering exactly 100km from end to end, the scenic drive takes approximately 70 minutes, however we recommend dedicating an entire day to do this journey justice. Take time to pause for meals and rest, wander through the towns you pass, engage with the locals, absorb the history, and bask in the fresh air. Your dog will enjoy the car rides between the silos as much as the walks around these impressive murals. Just keep them on a leash, and let them be part of the cultural experience.
Byramine Homestead & Brewery
Step back in time with a visit to the historic Byramine Homestead & Brewery, located at Burramine between Cobram and Mulwala. Built in 1842 by the famous explorer Hamilton Hume, the homestead has been classified by the National Trust ‘to be preserved at all costs’ because of its unique design and local significance.
Pets are more than welcome—just ensure they’re on a lead and enjoy the stunning outdoor spaces together. Explore the sprawling gardens, relax under the shade of the oldest Elm trees in Victoria, and sample the selection of boutique beers, ciders and wines from the brewery, located within the grounds. All varieties are made onsite from the produce grown on the surrounding farm. If you want to learn more about the homestead’s rich history, assistance dogs are welcome inside for the tours.
Chinaman’s Island, Yarrawonga
This tranquil nature reserve is perfect for a leisurely stroll with your pooch (on-leash of course). Chinaman’s Island, located in Yarrawonga, offers scenic walking trails that wind through wetlands and offer views of Lake Mulwala. It’s a peaceful retreat where you and your pup can enjoy some quiet time in nature. Keep your eyes peeled for native birds and other wildlife as you wander through this serene naturescape.
Squires Winery
Wine lovers rejoice! Squires Winery is not only known for its excellent wines but also for its pet-friendly atmosphere. Located on the banks of the Ovens River in Esmond, Squires provides a relaxed vibe by the river where people can not only enjoy great wine and food, but learn about wine in a fun and friendly way. Your dog is welcome to join you on the lush lawn areas, as long as they remain on a leash. While you savor a glass of local vino, your furry companion can relax by your side, making this a win-win for everyone. It’s the perfect way to cap off a day of exploring Sun Country’s attractions.
Explore Our Murray River Beaches
The sandy river beaches in Sun Country are some of the best in Australia, and the most picturesque spots to spend a day with your dog. In Cobram, Tocumwal, and Yarrawonga Regional Parks, you’ll find stretches of beach where you can picnic, swim, fish, walk and play with your pet. These areas are ideal for camping too, so if you’re up for a longer stay, you can pitch a tent and enjoy a few days of riverside relaxation. Just remember, dogs must be kept on a lead in these parks to ensure the safety of wildlife and other visitors.
For those seeking a bit more adventure, head to The Ranch Camping Area in Barmah. It’s a perfect spot for some off-the-grid camping with your dog. Surrounded by the beauty of the Murray River and its floodplain forests, this area offers ample opportunities for walks, birdwatching, and simply soaking up the peace and quiet. Carters Beach Camping Area on Ulupna Island is another top choice, with its wide and sandy shores and pet-friendly camping zones. The big drawcard is the shallow sandbar that extends into the river. Just be sure to check the signage as some sections are protected areas where pets are not permitted. Tucked away along the serene banks of the Goulburn River is Stewart’s Bridge Camping Area, another gem for those seeking a peaceful escape with their pet. This spot offers a tranquil setting where you can unwind by the water, surrounded by lush river gums and native wildlife. The camping area is perfect for those who love to fish, paddle, or simply soak in the natural beauty. Dogs are welcome here but must be kept on a lead, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Before setting up camp in any of these locales, it’s always best to do your research first. While you can usually bring your pooch to a regional park, national parks do place restrictions on pets.
