Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre

Cultural heritage

Yarkuwa is a Traditional Owner organisation based in Deniliquin. It was formed in 2003 to ensure traditional owner knowledge was preserved in future generations.

Yarkuwa has a small museum space at 394 Hay Road, where visitors can access and learn about the Indigenous heritage of the Wamba Wamba and Perrepa Perrepa People. A new, dedicated museum and gallery project is underway at Yarkuwa with exciting plans in motion.

The centre hosts displays and records of:

  • Cultural heritage artifacts including stone and wooden tools and woven baskets
  • Wamba Wamba Language learning displays
  • Local family information

Traditional Aboriginal-based items, foods, clothing and local Indigenous artwork can be purchased from the centre.

Yarkuwa offer guided cultural tours of the Island Sanctuary, where you can learn about the significance of flora and what it’s traditionally used for, you’ll also have an opportunity to view a scarred tree. Call ahead to book a tour on 03 5881 3312.
