Wine & Produce

it's wine country

Rutherglen in Victoria, just over the border from Corowa, is home to some of the oldest wineries in Australia, many of which began in the 1860s. Through strength, resourcefulness and hard work many of these wineries still operate today. These fifth- and sixth-generation winemakers are the characters behind the region’s famous wines, and often when you’re visiting – there are around 20 cellar doors to pop into – you get to meet the families behind the wines.

Visiting wineries in this region is a real treat, and a great way to discover something new and try some of Australia’s most iconic wines (fortified varieties are world famous). All of Rutherglen’s cellar doors are within a 15-minute drive from the centre of town, with many offering hampers, cheese boards, or fully-fledged cafes and restaurants.

Many of the restaurants and cafes of the region showcase local wines, meaning you can sample a few in one spot. The Blacksmith Provedore in Mulwala has a great selection and is in a lovely spot right on the lake.

Glorious food

Wine isn't the only gourmet hero in this region. Take the time to discover the amazing range of fresh produce and local delicacies. Grab some chocolate at Corowa Whisky and Chocolate (or get the kids to make their own), visit Gooramadda Olives and sample the fruit and oils, and – of course – don’t miss the chance to cast a line and catch your own. It doesn’t get any fresher than that!

Local Farmers’ and Craft markets showcase much of the local produce on offer and you’ll love the country vibe and friendly atmosphere. The Corowa Community Garden is open to the public. For a small donation you can stock up on locally grown fruits and veg. The colourful mosaic artwork scattered around the garden is quite the feature.

Fans of craft spirits will love the Corowa Distilling Co., which offers tours, tastings and sales of its impressive range of whisky. And if you’re stocking up for a picnic, even the local supermarket sells an impressive array of local food and wine.
