Camping North of the Murray

1 Jun 2022, by John Ryan

Camp somewhere different.

Pack your tent or stock up the caravan and head North of the Murray for a camping experience you’ll never forget. Make family memories full of fun adventures or just kick back and relax, surrounded by the pristine beauty of the Australian bush.

With free camping, RV-friendly facilities and cosy riverside caravan parks and campgrounds, this is A-grade camping in the heart of food and wine country.

Free camping

If you’re a camping purist, you’ll love pitching a tent at one of the free Parks NSW Murray Valley Regional Park sites. These sites are dog-friendly, but you do need to book ahead, (booking fee of $6 applies).

Each site has its own charms: from riverside serenity to the heart of bushwalking territory, you’ll find what you need here. Forage for firewood, boil the billy, and marvel at the evening sounds of native birds and animals preparing for the starry night ahead.

Just 3km from Mulwala is a stretch of the Lake Mulwala shore popular with campers. Kyffins Reserve might just be the ultimate free camp area. Boat access, amazing views of the lake, and a flat camp area suitable for all types of camping (RVs, caravans, tents and swags) are on offer here. Perhaps best of all, the location hosts spectacular sunsets across the lake.

Caravan parks

Towing a van? Love a tent, but also a shower? Enjoy simple cabins? We hear you!

Our region just North of the Murray is home to eight waterside caravan parks – most with cabins.

Choose your base, enjoy the park facilities, and explore nearby towns and villages. Stay out for a pub meal or head back and self-cater with an easy barbecue.

If direct water access isn’t an issue, these places are walking distance from the water:

RV Friendly

The village of Oaklands, about 60km north of the Murray River from Corowa or Mulwala, is a popular spot for RV drivers and caravaners to stop off and stretch the legs for a day or two. There are RV bays, barbecues and dump points in town, along with a simple, friendly pub and some historical displays. Many RV drivers continue from here to other RV-friendly towns such as Jerilderie, Finley, Albury or Yarrawonga.
