Island Sanctuary

Grassy areas and picnic tables make it ideal for families and visitors. The sanctuary is pet friendly, but dogs must stay on a leash to protect wildlife.

Flora and Fauna

The reserve is home to a variety of native animals, including red and grey kangaroos, black wallabies, echidnas, lizards, tortoises, and snakes.

More than 100 bird species have been recorded in the sanctuary. Waterbirds are common throughout the year. During floods, large numbers of Nankeen Night Herons and Intermediate Egrets nest within the reserve. River Red Gums dominate the landscape, alongside a small number of Black Box trees. Acacia dealbata is the only wattle species found on the island. Floodwaters help distribute seeds, supporting new growth throughout the reserve. River Couch and Kikuyu are the most common grasses.

Folklore

The sanctuary contains the burial site of "Old Jack", a member of the notorious Melville Gang. In 1851, Old Jack suffered fatal burns during a tragic accident in Deniliquin. He later received a bushman's burial near Tarangle Creek, beneath what became known as Jack's Tree.

Cultural Tours
