Sweat vs Steam is one of Echuca's most iconic running events, where participants race along the mighty Murray River and through the historic Port of Echuca — all while trying to outrun the world's oldest operating wooden‑hulled paddlesteamer.

What began in 1998 as a small half marathon with fewer than 50 runners has grown into a beloved community tradition, shaped by local volunteers and supported year after year by passionate participants.

The course has evolved over time, showcasing riverfront scenery, bush tracks and heritage landmarks. Today, Sweat vs Steam welcomes runners of all ages and abilities, from pram‑pushing parents and primary school kids to seasoned athletes and visiting competitors. The event has attracted standout runners such as Tarli Bird, Brady Threlfall, Archie Reid and Olympian Andy Buchanan, alongside strong community support and loyal groups who return year after year. With record participation of more than 720 runners and the addition of the Kids Dash for children as young as three, Sweat vs Steam continues to celebrate fitness, fun and Echuca Moama's vibrant river culture.
