If you’re looking at caravan parks in Swan Hill, the best place to start isn’t the facilities list. It’s what you want the holiday to look like.

Do you want to be close to Swan Hill’s main attractions and able to leave the car parked? Are you travelling with kids who’ll happily spend half the day at the splash park? Or would you rather wake up beside Lake Boga with a paddleboard or boat ready to go?

There are plenty of accommodation options around Swan Hill, so we’ve picked three caravan parks that offer quite different versions of a holiday. Here’s what to know before you choose.

BIG4 Riverside Swan Hill: Stay close to town and on the river

BIG4 Riverside Swan Hill sits right where the Little Murray River meets the Murray River, with some of Swan Hill’s biggest attractions practically next door.

Pioneer Settlement, the Monash Drive River Viewing Platform and Boardwalk and Yamagata Garden are only a few minutes away on foot, and there’s a gate at the end of the park that makes it easy to get straight out into the river precinct. You’re close enough to leave the car parked for a while, but the park itself still feels surprisingly quiet.

It’s also bigger than you might expect, with a mix of cabins, caravan and camping sites and glamping accommodation spread across the property. There’s a pool and jumping pad too. Or take a (very) short wander to the playground and skate park right next door.

This is the one if you want to be close to Swan Hill’s main attractions without feeling like you’re staying in the middle of town. You can walk to Pioneer Settlement in the morning, wander along the river afterwards, then head back to the park or out for dinner without feeling as though you’ve spent half the day in the car.

BIG4 Swan Hill: The one with plenty for kids to do

BIG4 Swan Hill

If you’re travelling with kids, this is the park they’ll pick.

The splash park is the obvious showstopper, but there’s also a swimming pool, mini golf, jumping pillow, playground, games room, pedal go-karts and a bike track. For a 10-year-old, it’s basically the dream.

BIG4 Swan Hill is only a short drive from the centre of town, so you can head into Swan Hill for the morning, come back after lunch, decide nobody’s leaving the park that afternoon and call it a win.

It also works well for bigger family and group trips. The four-bedroom Luxury Retreat House sleeps up to 10, while The BARN gives guests somewhere to gather without trying to squeeze everyone into a cabin, complete with a ping pong table and pizza oven.

Lake Boga Caravan Park: Make the lake the main event

About 15 minutes south of Swan Hill, Lake Boga Caravan Park is a very easy place to lose a day… or seven.

You wake up with the lake right there, so the paddleboard, kayak, fishing gear or boat is likely to make an appearance before anyone’s made much of a plan. Swimming, waterskiing and wandering along the foreshore can fill in the rest.

Stay here and Lake Boga becomes part of your holiday, rather than a stop on the itinerary for an afternoon. You can be on the water early, wander back to the caravan or cabin when you’ve had enough, then head out again when the mood strikes.

And you’re not miles from anything. Lake Boga has its own township and the Flying Boat Museum, silo art and Commercial Hotel for a pub meal. Swan Hill is close enough for dinner, shopping or a change of scenery when you want one.

If your ideal holiday flips back and forth between the water and doing not much at all, you’ll settle in pretty quickly.

So, which Swan Hill caravan park should you choose?

At BIG4 Riverside, you’ve got the river and some of Swan Hill’s biggest attractions a few minutes away. At BIG4 Swan Hill, there’s enough to keep the kids occupied well past the point you thought you’d need another plan. At Lake Boga, the lake is waiting just outside and hopefully you’ve packed something that floats.

Once accommodation’s sorted, there’s plenty more to plan (or deliberately not plan) around Swan Hill.
