The little rituals that make a Murray holiday yours
When the Mason family first started spending their Christmas holidays in Echuca Moama in the early 1990s, it didn’t take long to fall into a rhythm. The kids lived in their bathers, fished from the jetty and rode their bikes around the caravan park. Every day meant a swim at Moama Beach.
Mornings often started with a walk across the old bridge into Echuca before the day got too hot, followed by a wander through the shops and an ice cream. Evenings might mean a barbecue, fish and chips or dinner at the Moama Bowling Club. As the sun went down, the caravan park caretaker would ride through on his bike, ringing his bell to let the kids know it was time to head home.
The family returned year after year. As the kids grew, water skiing and wakeboarding joined the swimming, fishing and bike rides that filled their days. Now the next generation is doing many of the same things – swimming in the river, exploring the bush and chucking a line in.
Turns out their Murray habit stuck. In 2019, the parents moved to Torrumbarry, near Echuca Moama, where they now run Wisps of Wool Retreat. The rest of the family still comes back to visit and a place that was once part of their own family holidays now welcomes other holidaymakers too.
With thanks to the Mason family
