Spring is the best time to get out and about in the Swan Hill region, with so much on offer to keep the whole family active and entertained. Boasting more sunny days per year than the Gold Coast, and a temperature that averages a balmy 23 degrees, the Swan Hill region is THE place to shake off the chills of winter and embrace the warmth and natural wonders of the Murray.
Springtime in Nature
As the temperature slowly rises, nature explodes on the Murray River, with the wattle in full bloom and an unmistakable whisper of warmth in the air. There’s a buzz around the place, with the sound of footy finals in full swing, and school holidays drawing everyone out and about to enjoy the glorious sunshine. The Swan Hill region is the perfect location for a proper spring clean - both physically and mentally - with so much nature to explore.
With an abundance of walking and bike trails to choose from a leisurely stroll to the fitness fanatic. Or simply find a sunny spot on a river bank, throw a fishing line in, and just watch the world flow by.
The riverside is where you’ll connect fully to nature, as well as picturesque lakes and ancient forests - all teeming with native fish, birds and wildlife.
Key sites for bird watching include Lake Boga, Round Lake and the Tresco West Nature Reserve, while along the Murray there are some great locations in and around Nyah-Vinifera Park. The unique setting of Nyah-Vinifera includes 1000 hectares of majestic forest encompassing pristine nature, including century-old river red gums, beautiful billabongs and lagoons. This site is home to key Aboriginal historical sites from the local Wadi Wadi people such as canoe trees, middens and burial grounds. There are also wonderful camping sites, fishing spots and literally no-one for miles if you’re looking for a proper escape this spring.
Get out and get active
As well as connecting with nature, there’s plenty of activity on offer in the Swan Hill region to keep everyone entertained in the sunshine this spring. The Swan Hill Junior Basketball Tournament is hugely popular and always has the town hopping with families keen to shake off the long cold winter. Other events happening across the spring calendar include the Swan Hill Show on October 4 & 5, the Mallee Cruisers Car Club Autobarn RUSH event from October 18-20, and the prestigious NSW Open Golf Championship at Murray Downs from November 11-17.
Music, beer and food lovers will also be catered for at this year’s Brew and Chew Festival on November 22 & 23 at Riverside Park, Swan Hill. The line-up is epic, including the iconic Rubens and Echuca Moama’s own Yorta Yorta singer/songwriter Benny Walker. You can expect two days of great food and drink, fantastic live music and fun for the whole family, so make sure you get your tickets early.
Whilst on the music front, the incomparable RocKwiz Live! is returning to Riverside Park on November 30 and is not to be missed! Join the legendary RocKwiz crew for all the chaos and music trivia we all know and love from the long-running SBS television show. Please book ahead to avoid disappointment.
Riverside Park also plays host to an awesome monthly Swan Hill Market, offering all you’d expect from a regional gathering of great local produce, delicious food and crafts. This market is unique in the fact that it raises funds to support sick kids and their families.
