Dreaming of an easy, last minute winter escape that feels like a world away but is really just down the road?

Here we’ve handpicked some pretty spectacular getaways along the Murray to get you on the road and out of the city with minimal effort and maximum effect.

Greater Hume - Holbrook

Affectionately dubbed ‘Submarine Town’, Holbrook has built its identity around the history of WW1 and honouring the first submariner awarded the Victoria Cross, Lieutenant Norman Holbrook. Deep dive into history at the museum and reconnect with nature in the beauty of Woomargama National Park.

- Starting the day with a stop at Holbrook Paddock Eggs, where visitors can meet the happy hens and purchase some of their truly free range (and truly delicious) eggs.

- The Ten Mile cafe, with its farm to table menu featuring local wines and fabulous coffee, it’s a destination eatery and something a little bit special for this small but mighty town.

- Ending the day with a hearty meal at the historic Holbrook Hotel. A classically warm and friendly country pub environment, where classic pub cuisine reigns supreme.

And stay at The Holbrook Motel, which offers comfort and convenience in the very heart of Holbrook and a short stroll to everything on offer in this surprisingly fun, albeit tiny destination.

Yarrawonga Mulwala

Easy, fun and something for everyone can be found in the beautiful twin towns of Yarrawonga Mulwala. Boasting the stunning lake with its ghostly gums and the mighty Murray on the other side, Yarrawonga Mulwala has everything needed for an easy winter getaway.

Do Not Miss…

- The opportunity to climb aboard historic paddle steamer, the PS Cumberoona, and enjoy a scenic cruise taking in the stunning views of the river from right atop its glistening waters.

- Sampling some gourmet goods and stocking up the pantry at Rich Glen Providore. Renowned in the region for artisan and locally made oils, gourmet condiments and other delicious offerings.

- Wandering the surreal cacti gardens at Cactus Country, just out of town but a world away. Cactus Country is a unique, picture-worthy stop just a short drive from Yarrawonga and absolutely say yes to the cacti flower ice cream, regardless of the temperature outside.

- The renowned Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club for a hit of golf, where you can tee off at one of the Murray’s most popular courses, amidst some of its most stunning and iconic scenery.

And settle in for the night at the very luxe Sebel Yarrawonga with onsite restaurant and spa. More adventurous travellers can choose from one of the many excellent caravan parks with onsite cabins, powered sites and varying levels of facilities.
