Looking for a springtime getaway by the river that’s guaranteed to wash away the winter blues with sunshine, adventure, natural beauty and affordable family fun?
There’s no prettier season than this one to explore the riverside region of Deniliquin - where longer days promise extra time to wander, cycle, picnic, birdwatch, wine, dine and get up close and personal with mother nature.
Here you’ll find a region that’s bursting with life, colour, laid back country charm and heartfelt hospitality - not to mention some of the most stunning spring sunrises and epic sunsets you’ll ever feast your eyes upon.
Here’s a little teaser of some of the highlights on offer on the Edward River this spring.
Experience The Iconic Deni Ute Muster
As fate would have it, the region’s hallmark event, the Deni Ute Muster, just so happens to fall in the springtime. Winning!
This extraordinary event started out as a world record attempt 25 years ago to muster thousands of utes in a paddock and put Deniliquin on the map. Well it certainly did that, and today this world-class ute and music festival attracts around 20,000 people from all corners of the country.
Over two jam-packed days and nights, the Deni Ute muster puts on a monumental show, this year featuring global US sensations Tyler Hubbard and Kip Moore, legendary Australian artist Amy Shark as well as the best up-and-coming homegrown country music artists. And that’s not all, other highlights include The Australian National Circle Work Championships, Ute Barrel Race, the Go to Wo precision driving competitions and the Show N Shine competition featuring the coveted Ute of the Year title with a $2000 cash prize. Around the grounds the entertainment for families is next level with a full program of free kids activities. It all takes place on October 4 & 5 and you can camp onsite with your friends or family for the full ‘bucket list’ experience.
And don’t just come for the weekend folks - the community spirit in the week leading up to, and following, this great event is electric, and well worth extending your stay.
Pre-muster there will be Utes on Display in the CBD, and a Sculpture Muster at the Peppin Heritage Centre Gallery running from mid-September until late October which includes a showcase of sculptures, paintings and pieces from local talent.
Explore Deniliquin’s Surrounding Villages
Spring is also the perfect time for road tripping through the surrounding villages of Deniliquin, taking in the gold crested landscape of the canola fields in full bloom or a picture perfect sunrise or sunset over the Deniliquin plains.
Pack a picnic basket filled with local produce to enjoy along your travels, and be sure to fuel up at any one of the town’s pubs which are renowned in these parts for their warm hospitality, fresh local produce, hearty meals and icy cold brews.
Some of our favorite out-of-towners include the Blighty Hotel, Conargo Pub and Pretty Pine Hotel.
Live Like A Local In Deni
The very best way to experience Deniliquin in all its springtime glory is to live like a local.
On any given day that might include taking a leisurely wander through the living lagoons in the town’s CBD or along the water’s edge on the beautiful Beach to Beach River Walk with a fresh juice from one of the local cafes in hand.
It most definitely would involve grabbing a barista brewed coffee and strolling the markets that take over Waring Gardens on the second Saturday of each month.
Of course there’s always a local footy game to get along to (in September it’s finals time), and for the runners amongst us, you absolutely must join in on the Deniliquin Park Run on a Saturday morning.
There’s a brand new skate park in the heart of town that the kids will love, and do yourself a favour and hire a kayak from McLean’s beach to paddle the calm waters of the Edward River, or cycle through Willoughby’s on a free mountain bike from the Visitor Information Centre.
And before you leave for home, be sure to make time for a picnic in the beautiful Waring Gardens or on a sandy riverside beach, and for sipping a lush chardonnay or cocktail with friends at the Storyteller Wine Bar, Crossing Cafe or one of the local hotels.
Speaking of living like a local, in addition to Deniliquin’s Naponda Farmers Market and Lions Club Community Market, there’s another very special market just 20 minutes drive up the road that packs a very big punch.
If you happen to be in the region on Sunday September 1, mark your calendar for the Father’s Day Market at Pretty Pine Recreation Reserve. This annual event has grown somewhat of a legendary following over the years, and attracts visitors from near and far.
It features all the quintessential offerings you would expect from a country market plus some special extras including a dog high jump, rubber duck derby, flat chat dog race, sheaf toss, sheep weight guessing, silent disco and more.
Warm hospitality is a trademark of the friendly Deniliquin folk, as is their commitment to delivering authentic experiences and adventures for their visiting guests. Plan a getaway to Deni this spring and discover a region full of happy little surprises. You’ll find a complete list of all the events and activities on offer here.
