Winter in The Murray doesn’t mean slowing down. Sure, the mornings are cool and the days are shorter, but that just means moody landscapes perfect for photos, and glowing nights that surprise you.

Across the region, you’ll find festivals that light up river towns, cosy cultural events in beautiful heritage spaces and plenty of reasons to head out instead of hibernate. From immersive light trails to live blues and whisky by the fire, winter around here is far from quiet.

Here are the events lighting up The Murray this season, along with a few to start planning for in the months ahead.

For the glow-seekers

Some of The Murray’s most memorable winter moments happen after dark. Night-time events bring the region to life in surprising ways with glowing trails, riverside installations and the scent of woodsmoke in the air.

Whisky on the Murray

Corowa | 20 June

This riverside evening at Corowa Distilling Co. blends fire pits, live music and over 30 Australian distilleries.

Lantern Festival

Jindera | 1 August

This traditional German-inspired celebration lights up the heritage precinct of Jindera with lanterns, music and storytelling.

WinterGlow

Albury Wodonga | 15 August

Albury’s city centre comes alive for a winter street party with glowing installations, music, food stalls and family-friendly fun. Rug up and wander the streets with a hot toddy or sweet treat in hand.

Sound and light experiences

Various locations | Year-round

Winter nights don’t end with events season, either. Experiences like Bullanginya Dreaming in Cobram Barooga, Trail of Lights in Mildura and the Fibre Optic Symphonic Orchestra (FOSO) just outside Wentworth keep the region glowing long after sunset all year round.

For the music and story lovers

Not every winter event needs lights or fire. Some events bring warmth in quieter ways through songs, stories and shared experiences that connect people across tables, towns and generations.

The Hollowbrook Haunting Experience

Swan Hill | 1-11 July

Rumours of curses and ghosts haunt Blackthorn Manor where three siblings disappeared in 1926. Join an interactive experience in Swan Hill to discover what happened on that fateful night and see if you can free the lost children.

Mildura Writers Festival

Mildura | 16-19 July

Held each July, the Mildura Writers Festival sees writers, thinkers and readers come together for panels, meals and quiet moments of connection.

Echuca Moama Winter Blues Festival

Echuca Moama | 23-26 July

This free, all-ages festival turns Echuca Moama into a live music hub with gigs across pubs, gardens and public spaces. Expect everything from homegrown talent to well-known blues artists, plus a famously friendly crowd. You’ll leave with a new playlist and probably a few new mates.

For something a little different

Looking for an event that’s a bit unexpected? From high-speed desert races to classic vanilla slice competitions, The Murray has its fair share of winter oddities and that’s exactly what makes them worth the trip.

Wentworth Flood Rally

Wentworth | 5-7 June

It was 70 years ago that the Wentworth community rallied to save their town from the 1956 flood. Commemorate the anniversary with a multi-day tractor trek. On Sunday 7 June, the Main Street Muster welcomes you with machinery displays and entertainment, along with an Australian record attempt for the largest gathering of Ferguson tractors.

Hattah Desert Race

Near Mildura | 3-5 July

Australia’s largest desert enduro and the second largest off-road race in Australia brings hundreds of off-road riders to the red dirt just south of Red Cliffs. It’s loud, dusty and full of energy, with a strong local following and a decades-long history.

Balloons Over Mildura

Mildura | 4-12 July

Witness the sight of dozens of hot air balloons floating across the landscape around Mildura this July. This 9-day festival sees daily dawn and late afternoon balloon flights, as well as round two of the Australian Grand Prix competition. Don’t miss the Night Glow on Saturday 4 July with a balloon parade and illumination.

The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph

Merbein, near Mildura | 15 August

Bakers from all over the country compete for vanilla slice glory at this beloved annual event. There’s live music, market stalls and (of course) plenty of slices to try. It’s sweet and packed with pure country charm.

Mallee Almond Blossom Festival

Robinvale | 16 August

Celebrate the coming season as the almond trees burst into bloom. Take a bus tour through the blossoms (though book early, seats are limited), explore local arts and produce and soak in the spring atmosphere.

For the slow movers and curious minds

Winter’s also a perfect time to slow down, and across The Murray region, you’ll find thoughtful indoor gallery and museum options to match the pace. And the best part is, some of them won’t cost you a cent.

In Albury Wodonga, MAMA is where you’ll discover contemporary art with ever-changing exhibitions. The Art Gallery of Swan Hill’s collection focuses on Australian naïve art and pieces relating to the region.

If you’d prefer uncovering the stories of the past, Deni is home to The Depot Historic Vehicle and Memorabilia Collection with displays from around the world and closer to home, along with an American-style diner next door to grab lunch or a milkshake. Military history buffs will love the Tocumwal Aviation Museum and Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum.

For those already dreaming of spring

If winter's already filling up your calendar, it might be time to start looking ahead. Spring brings a new wave of events to The Murray, with everything from country shows to big-name favourites.

Henty Machinery Field Days

Henty | 22-24 September

Referred to simply as ‘Henty’ by those in the know, it’s a major event on the agricultural calendar and one of the biggest of its kind in the country (think 50k+ visitors over three days). It’s no wonder when you realise exhibitors range from the tractors you’d expect to caravans, spas and solar panels.

The farm gate produce area is a favourite, bringing together producers from across the Murray and Riverina regions with goods from freshly baked bread, handcrafted jams and cheese, organic meat and more. Also on the program, you’ll find fashion parades and cooking demonstrations alongside a host of guest speakers and rural innovation.

Deni Ute Muster

Deniliquin | 2-3 October

What started as a celebration of utes and country life has grown into one of Australia’s most iconic regional events. Yes, you’ll still find camping, live music and a lot of flannel, but the program also offers plenty for families to love.

The music lineup is stacked with headline acts including Tones and I, Lee Kernaghan and Tyler Braden. During the day, expect everything from the annual blue singlet count to line dancing, camel rides and magic shows. It’s always loud, proud and uniquely regional.

Plan your winter weekend

Winter might be cooler, but it’s far from quiet. Whether you’re chasing glowing nights, live music, regional flavours or a reason to rug up and explore, The Murray has a way of turning the season into something special.

Pick a weekend, book a cosy place to stay and choose your kind of winter. The river’s never quiet. You just have to know where to look.
