About

Just 3km from Tocumwal, there are a couple of lovely little beaches in the Murray Valley National Park that are convenient for daytrippers, and well suited to campers too.

Situated on Pumps Bend, Hennessy Beach is a safe and small 500-metre-long sandy beach. There’s room for caravans and tents on the banks overlooking the sand. The nearby Sonnemans Beach features a boat ramp and is popular with people wanting to fish while relaxing on and by the Murray.

Camping is free, however – like many NSW river campsites – you need to book ahead and pay a very small fee. Dogs aren’t permitted, and fires may only be lit between April and September.

The dirt road turnoff to these beaches is easy to miss. If you’ve driven from Tocumwal along Tuppal Road for more than 8 minutes, you’ve probably gone too far. Keep your eyes out for a track that runs parallel to the main road right by the river. Beaches are a short drive down the winding track.
