From the Murray River's source near Corryong in the Snowy Mountains, the river forms as it flows from the mountains, fresh and cold. From the enormous aquatic playground of Lake Hume, it travels through fertile land, becoming a state border and splitting twin towns like Albury Wodonga, Corowa and Rutherglen.
Along this stretch, for around 400km, shallow banks make way for wetlands teeming with birdlife, wineries and farms. Historic towns dot the river along the way, and finally some majestic forests of river redgum emerge.
