For much of its length, the Murray is a slow-moving river – making it absolutely perfect for a range of boating including houseboats, pleasure craft, paddlesteamers and more.

The long, wide Murray is perfect for relaxed cruising – so it’s no wonder that the region has the largest fleet of active paddlesteamers and houseboats in the world!

For a sense of nostalgia, a ride aboard a paddlesteamer is a must. Watch the boiler being stoked, listen for the distinctive steam whistle and imagine life 150 years ago. Echuca Moama is the home of the paddlesteamer, with a fleet of authentically restored riverboats and a historic wharf. Mildura and Swan Hill also offer daily paddlesteamer cruises.

Discover paddlesteamers from the Murray River

The most serene way to cruise the river at your own pace is aboard a houseboat. No need to book a hotel – just pull up where you choose and relax! Houseboat operators in The Murray offer a range from compact 4-berth to luxurious 12-berth models with sundeck, spa, ensuite bedrooms and state-of-art entertainment systems.

Houseboats are easy to drive (no licence required) and offer the ultimate in river freedom. Mildura Wentworth and Echuca Moama have the largest fleets, but you can also find them in Swan Hill.

River cruises and boat rentals

Whether you want to hire and captain your own barge equipped with a BBQ, speakers and seating, or leave the driving to somebody else as you enjoy the views and enjoy local food and wine on lunch or dinner cruises, the experience doesn't start and end with paddlesteamers.
